The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. However, performance and wet-weather grip reduce significantly well before this limit.

For safety, we typically recommend replacing tyres before they reach the legal minimum, especially on performance vehicles.

Cuts or cracks in the tyre sidewall can weaken the structure of the tyre. Sidewall damage cannot be repaired and may lead to sudden failure if ignored.

A bulge indicates internal damage to the tyre’s structure, often caused by pothole or kerb impacts. This is a serious safety issue and the tyre should be replaced immediately.

If the internal cords of a tyre are visible, the tyre has failed structurally and is unsafe to drive on. Continued use can result in a sudden blowout.
