Unlike earlier BMW engines, the N47 and N57 use a rear-mounted timing chain design. Over time, insufficient lubrication, long service intervals and chain material wear lead to chain elongation, worn guides and failing tensioners.

As the chain stretches, it begins to rattle against the guides. If ignored, this wear accelerates rapidly until the chain jumps teeth or snaps entirely — often resulting in catastrophic engine damage.
